BENEFITS OF LASIK
More than two million procedures have been performed using FDA-approved lasers in the United States and fewer than one percent of patients have experienced any kind of serious, vision-threatening complications. As with every surgical procedure, there are risks and benefits of these procedures. During your vision correction consultation, your doctor will give you a thorough explanation of all the risks and benefits involved with these procedures. At Mann Eye Institute, we take every precaution to ensure risks are minimized, and we go out of our way to make sure each patient is well-educated about the risks and benefits of LASIK.
LASIK side effects vary according to the patient. The majority of patients experience none, but the most common ones described are a ghost image on figures or objects, a doubling of the image, mild glare, mild fluctuation of vision, scratchiness or dryness, and a possible decrease in contrasts. These effects usually last only a few days.
HOW WE MINIMIZE YOUR RISKS
At Mann Eye Institute and Laser Center, we've significantly reduced the risk of complications by investing in state-of-the-art equipment. For example, complications caused by malfunctions of the microkeratome, the instrument used to create the protective flap during LASIK, were virtually eliminated when we replaced the outdated microkeratome with the IntraLase laser technology. With our improved laser technology and larger treatment zones, reports of glare, halos and light sensitivity have been reduced. To help prevent infection, air temperature, quality and humidity levels are carefully monitored within our laser suite. Sterility in the laser suite is also carefully maintained, and our staff is specially trained in the area of infection prevention.
